“Mind-hammering and heart-warming, Desiring God ignites a passion for God that would set the world ablaze if it were the norm and not the exception today.” – Os Guiness
“…a modern manual of true spirituality.” – R.C. Sproul
“…[a] soul-stirring celebration of the pleasures of knowing God…a must-read for every Christian, and a feast for the spiritually hungry.” – John MacArthur
There are plenty more praises for this book from other well-respected Christian leaders. And though only a few in this world may know who I am, I want to offer my own recommendation for reading this gem, especially Chapter 3, Worship: The Feast of Christian Hedonism.
This one chapter can transform your understanding of true worship, and it is almost entirely underlined in one of my copies!
Here Piper says:
Worshiping in spirit is the opposite of worshiping in merely external ways. It is the opposite of empty formalism and traditionalism. Worshiping in truth is the opposite of worship based on an inadequate view of God. Worship must have heart and head. Worship must engage emotions and thought.
Truth without emotion produces dead orthodoxy and a church full (or half-full) of artificial admirers (like people who write generic anniversary card for a living). On the other hand, emotion without truth produces empty frenzy and cultivates shallow people who refuse the discipline of rigorous thought. But true worship comes from people who are deeply emotional and who love deep and sound doctrine. Strong affections for God rooted in truth are the bone and marrow of biblical worship. (Italics mine)
Piper wants desperately for his readers to understand that the “engagement of the heart in worship is the coming alive of the feelings and emotions and affections of the heart. Where feelings for God are dead, worship is dead.”
